Lowboy Dispatch Services

Lowboy Trailer Dispatching

Lowboy trailers haul the heaviest, tallest equipment in the trucking industry — excavators, bulldozers, transformers, industrial machinery. With capacity up to 120,000 lbs and the ability to handle loads over 10 feet tall, lowboys serve the construction, energy, and manufacturing sectors.

Heavy haul dispatching requires specialized knowledge: state-by-state permit requirements, escort vehicle coordination, route surveys for bridge weight limits and overhead clearance, and timing restrictions. NexPick's heavy haul team handles every detail.

Why Lowboy Dispatch?

Premium rates for heavy haul freight ($4-$10+ per mile), specialized equipment commands higher pay, consistent demand in construction and energy sectors, and opportunity to haul unique, high-value loads.

Why Heavy Haul Requires Expertise

  • State-by-state permit requirements vary significantly and must be secured in advance
  • Escort vehicles (pilot cars) required for oversized/overweight loads
  • Route surveys essential for bridge weight limits, overhead clearance, and road restrictions
  • Timing restrictions — some loads can only move during specific hours
  • Specialized insurance requirements for high-value equipment
  • Coordination with utilities for line lifting or removal
Heavy Haul Rates:

Lowboy and heavy haul operators typically earn $4.00-$10.00+ per mile depending on load dimensions, weight, permit requirements, and complexity. Superloads and specialized freight can pay significantly more.

Lowboy FAQ

What's the difference between lowboy and step deck? +

Lowboy trailers sit much lower to the ground (deck height of 18-24 inches) compared to step decks (24-36 inches on lower deck). This allows lowboys to haul taller loads — up to 10-12 feet — while staying within legal height limits. Lowboys also have higher weight capacities (up to 120,000 lbs) and are designed for the heaviest, most oversized equipment.

Do I need special endorsements for lowboy? +

You need a CDL, and depending on the weight and dimensions, you may need additional certifications. Most states require special permits for oversized/overweight loads. We handle all permit requirements and ensure you're properly credentialed for each load.

How much does it cost to get permits for heavy haul? +

Permit costs vary by state, load dimensions, and weight — typically ranging from $50-$500+ per state. For multi-state superloads, permits can cost thousands. We ensure permit costs are included in your rate and paid by the shipper/broker. You should never pay permit fees out of pocket without reimbursement.

When do I need escort vehicles? +

Escort requirements vary by state but generally: loads over 12 feet wide require at least one pilot car; loads over 14 feet wide require front and rear escorts; loads over 16 feet wide may require multiple escorts and police. We coordinate all escort requirements and ensure compliance with state regulations.

What types of loads pay the most? +

Superloads (extremely oversized), wind turbine components, industrial transformers, mining equipment, and specialized manufacturing machinery pay the highest rates — often $8-$15+ per mile. These loads require extensive planning, permits, and coordination, which is why they command premium pay.

How far in advance do you book heavy haul loads? +

Heavy haul loads typically require 1-4 weeks advance notice for permit processing, route surveys, and escort coordination. Emergency or rush loads can be arranged but cost significantly more. We plan ahead to maximize your efficiency and profitability.
